Adult Bag Valve Mask Training Summary:
This is an optional module in the course. Medical professionals and some first aiders use these as a part of their job. But even if you do not use them, it is a good idea to understand how they work, as a paramedic would use one. They can be used with or without a supply of oxygen. The face mask has an air filled sack and this seals on the face over the mouth and nose. This part is similar to a first aid pocket mask.
When you squeeze the bag, you force the air in the bag into the lungs. This is either 21% oxygen in the air or 100% oxygen if connected to an oxygen tank. The benefit is that a higher oxygen inflation can be carried out without the need for putting your mouth over the patient's mouth. You can practice using these on a manikin.
